Understanding Cataracts

A cataract is a common eye condition that gradually impacts the clarity of your vision. To better grasp what a cataract is, imagine the lens of your eye as a clear, natural camera lens that focuses light onto the retina, allowing you to see sharp images. This lens can become clouded and less transparent over time due to various factors like aging, genetics, and environmental influences.

As a cataract develops, it behaves like a mist or a fog obstructing the light entering your eye and the images you see become increasingly blurry, colors may seem faded, and contrast between objects can be reduced. Reading, driving, and recognizing faces become more challenging. Glare from lights, particularly at night, can cause discomfort, and you might experience difficulties with depth perception.

Cataracts typically progress slowly, often affecting one eye before the other. Cataracts are not a growth on the eye but rather a natural change within the lens structure. While cataracts are a common part of aging, they don’t have to permanently hinder your vision.

The doctors at California Eye Professionals specialize in diagnosing and treating cataracts, tailoring each approach to your unique needs. We offer a solution for every lifestyle and visual requirement with various advanced intraocular lens (IOL) options, including PanOptix, Vivity, Toric, and standard IOL.

Traditional Monofocal Lens– This lens allows you to see images clearly at a distance. You will need to wear glasses to see clearly for images up close (such as reading) or at intermediate distances.

Toric Lens – This lens corrects astigmatism allowing you to see clearly at a distance. You will need to wear glasses to see clearly for images up close (such as reading) or at intermediate distances.

Vivity Lens – This lens allows you to see clearly at far and intermediate distances. Glasses may be necessary for reading fine print.

PanOptix Lens – This lens allows you to see clearly at a range of distances (far, intermediate and near). This lens typically greatly reduces your need for glasses.
